Empowering Teachers to Lead the Change

Highlights from CTY-Africa’s First ToT in Mayuge

Last month, Comrades to Youths Africa (CTY-Africa) held an inspiring Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop under the theme “Empowering Changemakers for Sustainability and Youth Leadership.” This one-day intensive session took place at the Mayuge District Headquarters Board Room and brought together a passionate group of teachers committed to driving transformation within their schools and communities.

The training marked a powerful step forward in strengthening CTY-Africa’s school-based programs: Students Empowerment, Sustainability Education, Play4Change, and E-Shule. By equipping teachers with both knowledge and facilitation tools, the ToT aimed to build a frontline network of educators capable of rolling out these initiatives with confidence and creativity.

“As teachers, we don’t just teach subjects. We inspire mindsets. And this training reminded us that sustainability begins with us,” said one participating teacher.

What Was Covered?

Participants explored a wide range of topics including:

  • Environmental conservation and climate action tailored for schools
  • Youth leadership and entrepreneurship under the Student Empowerment Program
  • The SDGs and how to localize them through school projects
  • Creative learning through the Play4Change model
  • Practical implementation of the E-Shule initiative in schools.

The training used a mix of expert-led sessions, peer-to-peer storytelling, and group planning exercises. Each educator left with a facilitator toolkit, complete with guides, templates, and activity checklists to immediately begin implementation in their schools.

Why This Training Matters

Most Ugandan public schools face limited access to environmental learning materials or youth engagement models. Yet, the role of teachers remains central to influencing student mindsets. Through this ToT, CTY-Africa is decentralizing its impact by placing tools and confidence directly in the hands of educators.

The cohort of 13 trained teachers will now serve as change agents in their respective schools mobilizing students for climate action, sustainability projects, and leadership development. This not

What’s Next?

This pilot ToT is just the beginning. CTY-Africa aims to scale this model to more schools in Mayuge districts, refine the training toolkit, and support peer mentorship among trained facilitators. As these changemakers return to their classrooms and communities, they are not just planting seeds of knowledge, but growing a greener, more empowered future.
